What We're Looking For

Call for Artists

By Jedidiah Chavez, Art Editor

Gertrude has promoted hundreds of visual artists through curated gallery exhibitions, a visual arts lecture series, and high quality printed reproductions in Gertrude Journal- the literary and visual arts publication of the press. To accompany print publication, Gertrude has also paired well published art writers with selected artists.

Gertrude Press is continually seeking visual art submissions for publications and future exhibitions. Gertrude is interested in work that is situated within contemporary art discourse and addresses themes of the body, loss, identity politics, or anything that may otherwise be ignored by traditional gallery settings or publications. Interdisciplinary work is highly encouraged.

Interested artists should submit a CV, 15-20 images on cd (or a website link), an artist statement, and a SASE postcard. We are sorry but due to limited resources, submission materials will not be returned. Further questions may be directed towards: art@gertrudepress.org.

Poetry in Gertrude

By Steven Rydman, Poetry Editor

Gertrude is looking for poetry that explores the queerness of humanity.  This is not to say it has to be written for or by someone who is LGBTQ, but by anyone willing to look at the human condition from the position of the outsider, the trickster, the person willing to observe at the edges of society and culture without contempt for their fellow travelers, but who is also willing to break the rules.  In this pursuit, we look for poetry that is impeccably crafted, with a reverence for the connections of form and content, rhythm and meaning, history and the now.  A fresh turn of phrase can change the way anyone looks at the world, so make us look at something or someone or somewhere anew.  Find its queer center and through the love of language, peel away its layers and lay it bare.  We dare you.

From the Fiction Desk

By Tammy Stoner

The fiction published in Gertrude ranges from traditional narrative to cutting edge, experimental work from both emerging and established LGBTQA writers who have developed strong voices and unique styles. Submissions not to exceed twenty double-spaced pages. Stand alone, novel excerpts are accepted. Surprise us! To submit on-line, [click here].
